We are here, of course, as part of the 14th annual brooklyn book festival which will draw tens of thousands of people to downtown brooklyn over the course of the day, several thousand of those people will be passing through here at Brooklyn Law School where we have been a proud partner of the book festival since 2012. And that has been a wonderful and natural collaboration since the law school and the festival are committed to the free exploration and exchange of ideas in an effort to better understand our world and, ultima

I maryellen fullerton, i teach law here at Brooklyn Law School and my specialties include Immigration Law and refugee law. Its a particular honor for me to be able to moderate the panel we are here for this afternoon, not my homeland but my home. Before we begin, the book festival has asked me to let everyone in the audience know a couple things. [applause] it feels really weird to be out in public and to find out about fiction its easy to hide behind all of that stuff it doesnt have much to do with politics this book is exceedingly personal for me going to the entire childhood and upbringing to reexamine my life as was mentioned to me from a small little indiana town which is 3000 people and factory workers and to be frank they have made up the base of Donald Trumps elective base. So i examined a lot of that stuff and just a little background what made this project start in the first place, go back october 7th 2016 which was my 35th birthday and also the day that donald trump access hollywood tapes dropped in which he said terrible misogynistic things on october 7th a hurricane was coming through and the access hollywood tapes dropped an hour and a half before the hurricane hit. Ill just pick up where i left off 25 years ago. I remember that. I remember that very clearly and we worked opposite each other. You were at nbc cover the trial of tim tim mcveigh in denver. Thats right, and went on actually to marry after the trial was over one of the lead prosecutors. So Oklahoma City and that horrible event is something that stayed with me but also in a pleasant way in the aftermath of all of it. Scott, let me start with journalism. This book, truth worth telling is an example of a wonderful career in journalism and journalism done the right way, with a sense of purpose and a sense of meaning. So, i jump right to the idea of where you think this state of journalism is today, and you write so jarringly in your book the dividing line that matters now is the one between journalism and junk.
The title was also kind of a joke on myself. Saturday, in her book afterlife, Alice Marie Johnson reflects on her time in prison before President Trumps commutation of her sentence. I stayed there for 15 years. Toldust imagine, i was that i would only leave prison as a corpse. That i would take my dying in prison. Do you think that was a recipe for hope . Sunday on indepth, author and College Professor paul candler will be our guest. On afterwards, an author discusses the rise in violence committed by young men around the world. Hes interviewed by Brooklyn Law School professor when we talk about other forms of violence, like White Supremacists attacking a mosque, often the narrative goes back to rhetoric. We have politicians saying this and this and that is why this person hates immigrants. Is i do think rhetoric important in understanding this.
