McKibben told the court that centralizing tax collections through the Hill County Appraisal District could save the county money, would be convenient to the public and could be accomplished without much extra work for his office, which already collects over $30 million in tax levies for local entities. Centralized collection makes paying taxes so much easier, and it s a huge benefit to the public, McKibben said. They only have to go one place to pay taxes.

Commissioners voted to rescind former court orders awarding bids for the construction of a new Precinct 3 maintenance barn in Penelope and a bridge over Brooken Creek on HCR 3206. The court will accept bids for the projects again after determining that the requests were not properly advertised the first time. County Judge Justin Lewis also updated commissioners on an effort to increase COVID-19 vaccine availability to Hill County residents. Although the county is not in charge of the vaccine rollout, Lewis said that the county worked with Ascension Medical Group Providence Clinic and Hill Regional Hospital to develop a proposal that was submitted to the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and the Texas Department of Emergency Management (TDEM).

Share State Agrees To Continue Free COVID-19 Testing In Hillsboro The Hill County Commissioners Court met in a regular session Tuesday morning, December 8, and discussed the continuation of free COVID-19 testing in Hillsboro along with other county business. Hill County Judge Justin Lewis said that the regional testing center has been an important resource for the general public, nursing homes, schools and others who need access to testing. Hillsboro s location on the I-35 corridor also made it an attractive site to the state as a regional testing center. County officials were recently informed that the site, which is operated by a contractor for the state, would close at the end of the year. Lewis said that he had been in contact with state officials, including Department of State Health Services Commissioner John Hellerstedt, to request that the site stay open.
