Bail has been rejected for a man who police allege violently assaulted a stranger almost to death with a set of nunchucks in New South Wales before fleeing to Mackay to avoid detection.
Jason Reginald Soars was arrested in the Mackay region this week and charged with grievous bodily harm with intent over an alleged incident at East Maitland between 10.20pm and 10.40pm on March 31, 2021.
Mackay Magistrates Court heard a passer-by found a man seriously injured and covered in blood in the middle of Ann Street in East Maitland.
Prosecutor Rob Beamish said he had several missing teeth and life threatening injuries that needed surgery.

An alleged stalker has accused Mackay courts and police of slapping him with âtrumped up chargesâ.
Clinton James Yasso is charged with unlawfully stalking a woman for about two months in 2020 and failing to appear in Mackay Magistrates Court on February 17, 2021.
The 54 year old claimed he had been legally represented in February but the court heard when his named was called at 2.50pm no one appeared.
Mr Yasso pleaded not guilty to the alleged stalking offence between May 8 and July 5 last year.
Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan explained Mr Yasso had a choice to keep the stalking offence in the magistrates courts where it would be decided by a magistrate or move it to the district court where it would be decided by a jury.

A Mackay magistrate told a serial drunken pest he had two options â either complete the maximum number of community service hours or receive a jail term.
The 23 year old, who has since moved to Western Australia, had been highly intoxicated at his own going away party when he committed his seventh public nuisance offence in five years.
Brodie Jordan Arnold, through his solicitor, had pushed for the mandatory minimum penalty of 40 hours community service allowing him to soon return to the west coast, but Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan said, âabsolutely no wayâ.
Mackay Magistrates Court heard on November 29, 2020 Arnoldâs friends had been trying to get him in a taxi on Victoria Street but he was swearing and pushing his friends.
