Downtown festival site A plan to build a permanent festival site centred on Friendship Park appears all but certain to pass after councillors enthusiastically backed it at a committee meeting last week. The $12.8-million proposal, which is intended to accommodate concerts, food fairs and other events, does not have a construction timeline or fleshed-out funding plan, apart from $2 million in provincial infrastructure cash. It is expected to take at least several years to build. Knox United tower Councillors will also consider a proposal from Knox Untied Church and Meridian Development Corp. to subdivide the church’s land so the developer can erect a 19-storey apartment tower and lease parking spaces back to the congregation. While the proposal has led to some criticism, Monday’s public hearing is necessary only because the church has municipal heritage designation and contends it should not apply to the adjacent parking lot.
