Packers QB Aaron Rodgers donates $1 million to help his hometown s small businesses

Small, locally owned businesses are the heart and soul of a community, said Rodgers. In the applications and the videos, it was heart-wrenching to hear about all the obstacles facing restaurants and retail establishments. So many of them are struggling just to stay in business but remain hopeful that there s an end to this. The fund was started in early February with a $500,000 donation from Aaron Rodgers, the Chico native who is a three-time NFL Most Valuable Player. After seeing the need, Rodgers decided to increase his donation to $1 million. It was augmented by $100,000 from NVCF, an anonymous donation of $100,000 and a generous donation from Sherry and Gary Holbrook of Holbrook s Clearance Center.

Column: San Diego once rejected Martin Luther King Jr , lets learn from it and be better

Print San Diego has no shortage of history to reflect on during what should be a holiday of reverence, introspection and charity. But the bit of history that I can’t quite get away from is the time San Diegans rejected Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In January 1986 the same year Martin Luther King Jr. Day was first celebrated as a national holiday the San Diego City Council decided it wanted to rename a major roadway in honor of King, joining many large cities across the country that had similarly opted to rename streets or landmarks in honor of the Civil Rights icon.

San Diego residents commemorate MLK s birthday with annual wreath laying

SAN DIEGO    More than a dozen residents gathered Friday to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with an annual wreath-laying ceremony. The celebration was held in Broadway Heights, a small residential neighborhood in southeastern San Diego, along Martin Luther King Jr. Way promenade, which is lined with photos of civil rights leaders and passages from King’s speeches. Organizers said paying tribute to King’s legacy was timely given the racial justice protests throughout last year and ongoing division in the nation. “This is what he talked about years ago . how we all should be free,” said Robert Robinson, president of the Broadway Heights Community Council, while listening to a reenactment of King’s “I Have A Dream” speech on Friday.
