State sponsorship of religiously motivated terrorism leads to more suicide attacks, research shows

Mon, 12/14/2020 LAWRENCE The separation of church and state remains a founding principle of the United States. But that’s rarely the case in most countries. And when it comes to religiously motivated terrorism, the state is sometimes to blame. This is particularly the case when suicide attacks are involved. “Existing research had suggested a direct link between religiously motivated extremism and suicide terrorism, but what we found was that this effect is heightened when religiously motivated terrorist groups are sponsored by the state,” said Brittnee Carter, assistant professor of political science at the University of Kansas. That’s the basis of her new article titled “State Sponsorship of Religiously Motivated Terrorism: A Deadly Combination.” It’s published in the latest volume of Democracy and Security.
