Sarah Davies wanted to quit weightlifting - now she and Britain are flying high

Sarah Davies wanted to quit weightlifting - now she and Britain are flying high Saturday, 10 April 2021 If Emily Campbell puts in a good performance in the women’s super-heavyweights she could help Britain to its best performance at the European Weightlifting Championships since 1948. Should she win in Moscow - and Campbell has the highest entry total of 271 kilograms in a field of nine - Britain will have two European champions for the first time since women started competing in 1988 and their best continental medal haul in 73 years. Campbell needs only to make a total to join Sarah Davies and Zoe Smith as qualifiers for the delayed Tokyo Olympic Games and it is possible that Emily Godley, winner of the 81kg gold on Wednesday, could join them if everything goes her way.

Leeds Trinity student to represent Team GB in the Para Powerlifting World Cup

A SPORTS and exercise science undergraduate at Leeds Trinity University has been selected to represent Team GB at the Para Powerlifting World Cup. Charlotte McGuinness, 19, will compete at the event in Manchester in March. The competition also gives her the opportunity to qualify for the rescheduled 2021 Tokyo Paralympic Games, due to take place in August. Charlotte, who is seventh in the world in her weight category and third in the world for the junior weight category, is supported through the University’s Talented Athlete Support Package, which assists student athletes competing at a high level in their sport to manage their studies and their sports careers. She is currently training four times a week in preparation for the World Cup. She is among a team of 13 athletes selected by British Weight Lifting, and will compete against athletes from across the world in the bench press women up to 50kg category.
