The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston has been forced to return an Egyptian child s coffin to Sweden after it was revealed to have been stolen from the Uppsala University Museum in 1970.
The Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston has returned a small decorated clay sarcophagus belonging to an Egyptian child who died over 3,000 years ago to Sweden's Gustavianum, Uppsala University Museum after discovering that the artifact had been stolen.
“I kind of had a feeling about which way this is going to go,” said Victoria Reed, senior curator of provenance at the Museum of Fine Arts. “It’s very clear that we didn’t necessarily have the documentation that we thought we did.”
