Battle of the Chesapeake (September 5, 1781), in the American Revolution, French naval victory over a British fleet that took place outside Chesapeake Bay. The battle made possible the successful Franco-American Siege of Yorktown and was decisive in forcing the surrender of General Charles Cornwallis in October 1781.
