Pretoria - The Piet Retief Regional Court has sentenced a 23-year-old man from New Stand, Mpumalanga province to life imprisonment for raping a 16-year-old girl.
Lindokuhle Madonsela was initially charged alongside five minors, but they were later acquitted due to insufficient evidence, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Mpumalanga spokeswoman Monica Nyuswa said in a statement.
âIn November 2017, the victim was walking in Driefontein with her three friends when they were chased by a group of men. Her friends managed to outrun them but she was caught and taken to a secluded area where she was gang raped,â said Nyuswa.

A police officer has been arrested for his alleged
involvement in a spate of Volksrust business robberies.
He joins six people who were arrested previously.
Three of the six are on the run after escaping from
custody.

Mpumalanga police have launched a manhunt for suspects who escaped from police holding cells in Volksrust on Sunday.
Seven suspects escaped and three were still on the run, said police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi. Police in Mpumalanga have launched an investigation and manhunt following an incident where seven suspects escaped from Volksrust police holding cells [on] Sunday 7 March 2021. However, four of the escapees have been rearrested, whilst the other three are still at large, he said.
The suspects were arrested for various offences including robbery, rape, possession of drugs, housebreaking and theft.
