South Dakota’s response to COVID-19 presented a new generation of COVID entrepreneurs a unique opportunity, one that wasn’t possible everywhere.
Alessio Di Sabatino grew up in Rome but he’s lived in the United States for more than twenty-five years. He owned a restaurant in California but sold it in March 2020, right before the state shut down.
“So, I had a chance to decided what I want to go to my life,” he said.
Di Sabatino moved to Rapid City. He visited a friend here once and loved it. He began looking for restaurant space almost immediately and last November, he opened an authentic Italian restaurant downtown.
Two groups have merged to support entrepreneurs and startups in Sioux Falls.
The Zeal Center for Entrepreneurship will merge with and take the name of Start Up Sioux Falls.
The nonprofit recently revealed new branding, created a new website and announced plans to move downtown.
It didn’t make sense for Sioux Falls to have two organizations that focus on supporting startups and entrepreneurs, according to business leader Matt Paulson.
“We knew we would be stronger if we combined efforts. For the organization to be successful in the future we needed to combine the best aspects of Zeal and the best aspects of Startup Sioux Falls into one organization,” he said.

A local nonprofit focused on encouraging startup growth in the Sioux Falls area announced intentions to rebrand and relocate Thursday evening.
The Zeal Center for Entrepreneurship and Startup Sioux Falls announced at the Hey Sioux Falls awards ceremony that it will rebrand under one name: Startup Sioux Falls.
Along with rebranding, the organization will relocate to downtown Sioux Falls to improve access for its community members. The nonprofit, which has offices available for its entrepreneurial members, is currently located in northwestern Sioux Falls near Southeast Tech and the CTE Academy.
The actual location has not been secured yet, said Startup Sioux Falls Executive Director Brienne Maner in an emailed statement. The organization is working on finalizing how much space it needs.
