close to the vice president conceded that vice president pence had been briefed on the fact that president trump was pressing ukraine to investigate his political rival joe biden. pence received those briefing materials before he, himself, went to meet with the president of ukraine whereupon vice president pence told the ukrainians their aid would be held up until that investigation happened. that is not good for the vice president, right? that is exactly what the president is being impeached for. it really looks like he did it too, and worse, if he was the one who made it explicit. no aid unless they did it. well the three chairs of the committees who are handling the bulk of the impeachment proceedings are confirming now that they are investigating pence in the core issue of the impeachment. approaching a foreign government for dirt on a political rival
is that right? i think that s about right, nicole. he definitely delivered the corruption message when he met with president zelensky in early september which was a period when the aid was being held up and before it was released. you know, look, the argument that my reporter colleagues heard from the white house was that the vice president was unaware of the request to biden about biden. i don t know if that s actually true. it doesn t quite add up for a couple of reasons. one is that the vice president s national security adviser keith kellogg listened in on that call that trump had with president zelensky. so would ve been aware of everything that the president said to his ukrainian counterpart. and the other thing it just doesn t fit tight for pence. he is actually quite studious. he s somebody who tends to read his briefing materials who tends to do his homework to be prepared for foreign visits certainly and for sessions with forren leaders.
dots, to not be curious, if you are a foreign policy decisionmaker in this white house, not to be curious about whether that is interfacing with policy decisions. i think, you know, it begs a lot of questions they re facing right now in pence s orbit. and at the same time there s also reporting in the washington post that his national security adviser, pence s, was on that call, as was, we now know, pompeo. so clearly he would have been briefed, it would have been in the presidential daily brief the next day, there would have been a lot of readouts he would have gotten. their defense is he didn t know what was going on or didn t read his briefing materials as he was going to a meeting with zelensky in warsaw. kurt volker, envoy to ukraine, the first key witness, he resigned from the state department on friday nate, he s on the hill now apparently testifying. geoff bennett, what do we know about this, when did he go in
quote, white house officials say pence likely would have received detailed notes of the president s call with zelenskiy in his daily briefing book on july 26th just one day after the call took place. those same officials also telling t the washington post tonight that that detailed record of the president s call with zelenskiy, which we have all seen now, which shows president trump plainly pressuring zelenskiy to give him dirt on biden, that five-page document should also have been part of the briefing materials that pence was given to take with him to warsaw to prepare for his own meeting with the ukrainian president. quote, officials close to pence contend that he did travel to warsaw for a meeting with zelenskiy on september 1st, but these officials close to pence say that pence did travel to that meeting, quote, probably without having read or at least fully registered the transcript of trump s call with the leader of ukraine. so this is the vice president s
