The Bridgetown Port Taxi Co-op Society and the Ministry of Elder Affairs and People Empowerment continue to partner with the private sector to make a difference in the lives of children living at two of the Child Care Board residential centres.Fifty children from the Nightingale Children’s Village and Marina Brewster Centre at Farrs recently enjoyed a day at the races at the Garrison Savannah, St Michael.Chief executive officer of the Barbados Turf Club, Rosette Peirce, said the children got the opportunity to view the races from the sponsors lounge, which overlooks the famous paddock bend and as special guests, they “were treated to full hospitality-food, drinks and ice cream”.Peirce said the children also got to meet some influential people in the horseracing industry and champion jockey and leading apprentice rider Teshawn Hazlewood.She said she was pleased to be part of the initiative when approached with the idea and it was an emotional experience for her.
Barbados’ tourism product may be in for a big boost with the addition of over a dozen locations to the list of official places to visit.On Monday, the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI), the agency tasked with marketing the island’s bread and butter industry unveiled the new places of interest and a plan to use more taxi operators to share stories about the island’s rich heritage and history with visitors.Acting Chief Executive Officer Marsha Alleyne said a part of the plan was to increase tourist spend on the island and expose more local shops and entrepreneurs to visitors and especially cruise passengers.“All of this is helping us to ensure that our visitor spend is increased, because at the end of the day we want that visitor spend to increase and we want more persons who come off of our cruise ships to explore the island. That means there will be economic empowerment for a lot more persons than traditionally we would have had,” Alleyne told a press conference at the B

Some senior public transportation operators have dismissed as rumours, information circulating on social media alleging that several taxi drivers have been tested for COVID-19 after one of their colleagues who operates from a west coast property tested positive for the virus.
A message has been making the rounds, saying it was confirmed that “a guy” from a taxi stand at a west coast property tested positive for COVID.
“As a precaution, the other drivers were tested and told to quarantine at home awaiting results. The guys went straight back to work and are still on the job as we speak,” the message read.
