The Craven County Sheriff s Office has called off a day of searching the Neuse River for a missing Vanceboro man because of the weather.
Charles Vandiford, 72, was dropped off in the area of the BridgePointe Hotel and Marina, Outback and the Neuse River Bridge exit around 7:30 a.m. yesterday and has not been seen since.
Major David McFadyen told reporters that there was no certainty that Vandiford was in the water. Rather, since he has not been found elsewhere, it was only logical to begin a river search while other possibilities continue to be pursued.
Craven County Emergency Director Stanley Kite also said there is no direct evidence that Mr. Vandiford is in the water but that it is being searched to be sure all the possibilities are covered.
