草庵寺坐落在隶属于泉州的晋江一处僻静的半山上，周边绿树葱茏，清幽深邃。寺中有尊元代摩尼佛造像，是全世界仅存的摩尼教主石刻造像。寺前还曾出土过一件刻有“明教会”字样的元代黑釉碗。草庵寺的存在显示了古泉州作为世界海洋商贸中心强大的文化包容力，以及商贸活动带来的文化融合。由三十多个国家成员组成的联合国教科文组织“海上丝绸之路”考察团于1990年10月从威尼斯起航，翌年二月到达泉州后曾到草庵寺考察，认为摩尼光佛像的发现是海上丝绸之路考察活动中的最大成就。草庵寺背后的山坡上，浓荫遮日的古树盘根错节于巨大的山石之间，更增添了宛如世外的神秘感，这样的环境的确是修行隐居的好地方。弘一法师李叔同曾在草庵寺养病，当时他以为自己不久于人世了，没想到一个月后病好了，就作了《重兴草庵碑记》
