well, if the democrats offered this before, why aren t they agreeing to this deal this time around? because what we understand is that the president is going to offer the bridge act, which is different from the original proposal that would have protected dreamers permanently. this bridge act was designed by dig durbin of illinois, a democrat, and lindsey graham, of south carolina, a republican, and the goal was to be a bridge as it s called to just protect those dreamers on a temporary basis, until a long-term plan could be put into place. so the sense that we re getting from democrats is they re not going to exchange any money for a physical wall, even if it is only $6 billion, for a permanent structure in exchange for only temporary status for these dreamers. they re not going to trade permanent for temporary. so that s why the sense right now is that this proposal is dead on arrival, before it is even actually introduced to democrats, and fred, we should keep in mind, with all of th
job, get the government working, get these people back to work. you mentioned this is a holiday weekend. nobody is there. have you had any early reaction from any of your sources? well, i think republicans are all rallying behind the president. you know, it is almost like a state of the union address where you go out and interrue people after the address interview people after the address and the republicans are all cheering president trump and the democrats are all panning president trump. i think what president trump is trying to do is drive a wedge between democrats, you know. if you go back and look at this bridge act, which the president is putting on the table here that would give three years of protection to the dreamers and these daca kids, you know, chuck schumer was a cosponsor of that. dick durbin was a cosponsor of that. kamala harris, a presidential hopeful was an endorser of that, so the president is trying to drive a wedge between democrats and put the onus on them a
strategy discussion. look, we were there to discuss what we need to do to ensure that we protect the american people who want rising wages and safe streets. that is a very worthy reason to get together. we were building a strat bring to get border security outcomes that the president ran on. some senate democrats are interested in issues like the bridge@act, tps, who might be willing to come on board with a robust border security package, with a physical barrier, wall, whatever you want to call it. that s ultimately our path to success. look, in that room in 2015 called the wall childish. he said it was absurd. he said it wouldn t be effective. listen. and, by the way, the bottom line is the fence doesn t stop anybody who really wants to get across. you go under, around, through. that s what the ranchers tell us. they don t need a fence. what they need is more manpower, technology and more willingness to enforce the law as it exists
some clarity from the white house on what the president would actually sign. here s part of that conversation from yesterday. it would help if the president would say, hey, i will sign the d.r.e.a.m. act or i will sign of bridge act or the safe act or any of these. that would really help. reporter: so there s a little bit of hot potato here. the president saying it s congress job to fix this. the congress saying we ve got a whole bunch of options, which one do you want. we ll see if the president wants to wade in and off any clarity to lawmakers. it s not actually that surprising to see jeff flake questioning the white house and their intentions. what s mind blowing is the president seemingly undercutting jeff sessions just hours after he sent jeff sessions out to speak to the american people. let s go there, to the white house, where kristen welker is standing by. kristen, help me. as usual, i m utterly confused. the president now says he s going to revisit d.r.e.a.m.ers if con
