HAMILTON â Starting Feb. 1, the town of Hamilton will require all residents to compost food waste and materials like tissues, coffee grounds and even hair â and will not pick up regular trash unless it is accompanied by a separate bin for those compostable items, town officials have decided.Â
The measure is believed to be the first time a city or town in Massachusetts has mandated household composting. Well, this is being read by all of the environmentalists in the state and they re so excited by what s about to happen, and it s happening for the right reasons, Gretel Clark, chair of the town s Waste Reduction Committee, said during last Monday s meeting, where the Board of Selectmen voted on the final wording of the policy.Â
Updated: 12:39 PM EST Dec 29, 2020 Officials in a Massachusetts town are requiring residents to leave out a compost bin during trash collection in order to have their garbage picked up.The Hamilton Board of Selectmen announced that they recently passed an organics ban, which bars residents from putting food waste and compostable paper in their trash.The organics ban was instituted as the board tries to find other ways to reduce the amount of trash generated by Hamilton residents after officials suspended the town s bi-weekly trash pickup program as more people began working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and thus generating more trash.The only requirement under the ban at this time, however, is that every household has its town-provided green compost bin curbside during weekly trash collection.
