Ways to avoid pain from wearing a mask to prevent COVID-19

A host of similar complaints have started coming in from a multitude of friends, coworkers and patients about a new problem they’ve never had before: jaw pain, otherwise known as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. Masks are not only hot and uncomfortable, but they can leave a lingering effect of TMJ pain, headaches and neck pain. How could one piece of cloth and string cause such issues? Let’s consider the anatomy of the jaw, ear and neck and how they are all connected. The jawbone (mandible) and lower lateral region of the skull (temporal) connect forming the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Between the two bones is a semi-flexible cartilage disc that allows for multi-directional movement. Lastly, the TMJ is surrounded by ligaments, connective tissue, nerves and blood supply.
