The sculpture, unveiled on June 19, was reportedly defaced around 4 a.m. on Thursday. Vandals spray painted “PATRIOTFRONT.US,” a website for a fascist group, on the pedestal, said police. Patriot Front is a white nationalist hate group as identified by the Southern Poverty Law Centre. Black spray paint was also smeared across the bust. NYPD said it is looking for four males in connection with the incident. They released a surveillance photo of the four near the area of the statue before the act. The NYPD is investigating the incident as a hate crime. The wooden sculpture was created by 200 individual, precisely crafted pieces of plywood by artist Chris Carnabuci.
