City officials confirm presence of COVID-19 variants in Amarillo community
During Wednesday’s COVID-19 news conference, medical professionals said they are encouraged by the recent COVID-19 trends in the community related to the number of active cases and hospitalizations.
“When we look at these numbers, we can see that our new cases remain low, our active cases remain low, our hospitalizations are clearly low (and) there’s plenty of vaccine available,” said Scott Milton, the city’s public health authority and an associate professor at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Amarillo.
However, even with the lower case numbers and hospitalizations, the presence of COVID-19 variants in the Texas Panhandle were confirmed during the conference.

Officials with the Texas Department of State Health Services announced Wednesday the categories for individuals who can be vaccinated throughout the state will be extended on Monday.
The announced Phase 1C vaccination category allows all individuals at least 50 years of age the chance to be vaccinated in the state. This phase joins educators, as well as those in the Phase 1A and 1B categories, including frontline workers and people 18 years of age and older who have at least one chronic medical condition that puts them at increased risk for severe illness if they contract COVID-19.
The city of Amarillo hosted its weekly COVID-19 news conference Wednesday morning, prior to the Texas DSHS making its announcement. However, Casie Stoughton, city public health director and a member of the state’s COVID-19 expert vaccine allocation panel, alluded to the possibility of the Phase 1C announcement.

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Preparing for the worst but expecting the best.
That is how many healthcare workers are treating COVID-19 cases with spring break approaching and Governor Abbottâs eased restrictions.
With Texas reopening and the mask mandate being lifted, many healthcare workers say they donât know how COVID-19 cases will be impacted.
Many are hopeful because unlike other times when cases surged, this time more are vaccinated against the virus.
