Plan to demolish former Mayfield School in Whitehaven described as shocking by councillor

Plans to demolish a former special school have been described as “shocking” by a Whitehaven councillor. Cumbria County Council said it intends to raze Mayfield School, on Moresby Road, because it’s a potential target for vandalism and health and safety risk. The application for demolition has appeared on the council’s own planning portal this month. Pupils moved out of the facility at the end of 2018 and into Campus Whitehaven, Red Lonning. Copeland councillor Brian O’Kane, who is also the mayor of Whitehaven with the town council, said he’s concerned by the plans. He added: “We don’t understand the justification behind the destruction of the complex, there is no information to make a fully-justified decision.
