Summit County officials approve short-term solutions to mitigate parking issues, safety concerns at Quandary Peak

At a Summit Board of County Commissioners work session Tuesday, May 25, officials approved which short-term solutions they’d like to see implemented this year as the summer season kicks into gear.

Summit County moves forward with safety measures for Dillon Valley neighborhood

Photo by Hugh Carey / Summit Daily archives During a Summit Board of County Commissioners work session on Tuesday, May 4, Summit County officials said they are moving forward on implementing short-term safety measures in the Dillon Valley neighborhood. The conversation stems from a December 2020 work session when the county commissioners gave the go ahead to assess the cost and engineering feasibility of a variety of proposed improvements for the neighborhood. At Tuesday’s meeting, officials discussed which measures should be taken immediately. During the meeting, Robert Jacobs, road and bridge director and county engineer, reviewed a memo that identified each proposed improvement and the cost estimate associated with each project.

Blue River Horse Center withdraws proposal to use Summit County fairgrounds

Photo by Liz Copan / Studio Copan In a move that surprised the county’s elected officials, the Blue River Horse Center on Tuesday withdrew its proposal to use the county fairgrounds as a home for its nonprofit horse rehabilitation and educational programming. Blue River Horse Center Executive Director and Founder John Longhill shared that change of heart with county commissioners and officials at Tuesday’s county work session. Longhill said the analysis of the proposal conducted by several county departments analysis that did not support the organization’s wishes to use a 5- to 6-acre parcel for programming influenced him to withdraw the request.

Snake River Watershed Task Force creates model for mine cleanup projects

Photo by Kim Fenske After a major project to clean up the Snake River watershed due to acid mine drainage from the Pennsylvania Mine, project members say the effort can serve as a model for other communities to restore an area damaged by mining. detailing progress on the Pennsylvania Mine project, including improvements in some of the heavy metal concentrations below the mine. According to the report, the Pennsylvania Mine was considered one of the state’s most problematic and polluting inactive mines. While the major pieces of the project are complete, Summit County Open Space & Trails Director Brian Lorch said monitoring and work on the project which began in the late 1990s will be ongoing and that hundreds of mining claims in the area will continue to be addressed.
