News Highlights: LG to apply mobile tech to EV parts despite smartphone exit plan.
SEOUL – LG Electronics said Friday it would apply its mobile device technology to its home appliances and electric vehicle components, despite a plan to exit the smartphone market.
South Korea’s second-largest electronics company said it was studying how to preserve its mobile technology as it is key to the further development of smart home appliances and auto parts. LG reiterated that the company is considering all options for its loss-making smartphone business after CEO Brian Kwon sent an internal memo to employees last week saying it was time to make a decision about the future of the unit.

SEOUL:
South Korea’s LG Electronics said on Wednesday it was considering all options for its loss-making mobile division, which analysts said could include shutting its smartphone business or selling off parts of the unit.
Shares in LG closed up 12.8%, against a rise of 0.7% in the broader KOSPI index.
“In the global market, competition in the mobile business including smartphones has gotten fiercer,” LG said in the clearest sign yet that it could be considering a winding down of the troubled business.
