Teen s comeback story highlights how identifying strokes early can make all the difference

OSWEGO, Ill. â It may not be something we associate with kids, but suffering a stroke is one of the top 10 causes of death in children in the U.S. The signs can often be missed because of lack of awareness.
At 6-feet 4-inches tall and 280 pounds, 16-year-old Carson Cathey is a powerhouse on the football field.
âI bench a lot, probably around 350 pounds,â he said.
The Oswego High School junior is a defensive tackle and has been playing sports all his life.

barberi waiting for a kidney for more than a year. i was a young, healthy guy. i was a firefighter, active duty, you know, responding to calls. all of a sudden, here i am. i m the guy who is sick. you re not used to ebeibeing thy who is sick. reporter: his wife was going to give him one of her kidneys. but i wasn t compatible. all right. game day. reporter: but then something else surprising happened. we re here, ready for surgery. reporter: since her husband was being saved by brian, the stranger, debbi decided to pay it forward and offer her kidney to anyone who needed it. i never thought i was going to even be a match to anybody, and then we got the phone call and i was shocked. reporter: shocked because the day brian, al and debbie all went into surgery, so did 74-year-old ed cranepool. the last stop on this short chain of remarkable kindness, he got debbie s kidney, and who is he? that s the fight today.
