Federal stimulus nearing passage would further bolster school budgets | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS The latest federal stimulus bill hurtling through Congress would represent another massive infusion of money for New York schools – even as the specifics are still shrouded amid state budget uncertainty. Schools across New York are set to receive about $9 billion combined in direct aid to districts, which comes on top of around $4 billion in direct federal aid to New York schools approved in December, money Gov. Andrew Cuomo proposed allocating to districts next school year. Another $12.5 billion included in the new stimulus bill, which House lawmakers are expected to give final approval to Wednesday, would provide general funding to the state, which could be used to offset proposed cuts in state school aid.

By Susan Arbetter New York State PUBLISHED 2:10 PM ET Feb. 02, 2021 PUBLISHED 2:10 PM EST Feb. 02, 2021 SHARE Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposed executive budget includes a novel way to save the state money and cut school aid.  You may have heard that under Cuomo’s proposal, he squeezes several aid categories into a single funding stream that cuts $700 million in state aid to schools. But there’s another element of the governor’s plan that could cause school districts even more acute pain. He wants to cut the STAR reimbursement that the state provides to school districts. Typically, STAR recipients pay less on their property tax bills and then the state reimburses the districts for the difference. But this year, the governor’s executive budget cuts the reimbursement to districts by $1.3 billion.
