About 1,800 people lost power for a couple of hours last week in the Champaign area after Mylar balloons, were released and eventually became entangled in power lines. It can happen anywhere, and a spokesman wants to ask you to help prevent that.
Ameren Illinois spokesman Brian Bretsch tells The Big Z they d like to see customers properly dispose of the shiny, metallic balloons to avoid safety hazards and damage to the electric grid.

Ameren Illinois is continuing a two-year electric grid project to enhance service reliability for customers in Jersey and Macoupin counties. The total investment in the project is more than $18 million.
Last year the company installed power lines and power poles to withstand high winds during storms, “storm-hardening” the area. Utility spokesman Brian Bretsch tells The Big Z they will be doing work on three substations this year.
