Five Razorbacks advanced in three events to the NCAA Championships in Austin during the first day of action in the NCAA West Preliminary round hosted by Sacramento State. In addition, Arkansas had nine entries advance to Friday’s quarterfinals in six events.
No. 1 Arkansas set a record in terms of total entries for the 2023 NCAA Championships with 44. Starting on Wednesday the field of 48 in individual events at the NCAA West Preliminary rounds, hosted by Sacramento State, will start to be trimmed to 12 by Friday’s second rounds.
On a day in which the Razorback seniors were recognized at the Arkansas Twilight on Friday, quite a few of the 25 individuals honored produced some of the top performances at John McDonnell Field.
A pair of meet records in the discus and shot put were bettered by Razorbacks Ralford Mullings and Rojé Stona on Friday at the John McDonnell Invitational. Mullings won the discus with a throw of 199 feet, 2 inches, while Stona set a career best of 65 feet, 10.5 inches in the shot put.
For a guy who hadn t even practiced the 3,000 steeplechase until Thursday, University of Arkansas junior Jacob McLeod had an impressive racing debut in the event.
