Indiana union calls governor s unemployment decision cruel

Indiana union calls governor s unemployment decision cruel | Indiana

Indiana union calls governor s unemployment decision cruel Associated Press   INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana AFL-CIO is criticizing Gov. Eric Holcomb’s decision to withdraw the state from federal programs providing an extra $300 in weekly payments to unemployed workers and expanded jobless benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic. The labor union said it cost the state nothing to remain in the programs, arguing that they have provided millions of dollars a week to families who could soon face having no income. Holcomb announced this past week that the Indiana would leave those federal programs effective June 19. Many businesses blame their difficulty filling job openings on the extra $300 weekly payment and programs that provide jobless aid to self-employed or gig workers and to people who have been unemployed for more than six months.

Call for worker safety in state | Indiana | The Journal Gazette

Call for worker safety in state Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana labor union leaders are calling for improved workplace safety enforcement with the state s rate of deaths while working about one-third higher than the national average. Federal data shows Indiana had 146 worker deaths during 2019, the most recent year available. A report from the AFL-CIO says that represents 4.7 deaths per 100,000 workers compared to the national rate of 3.5 per 100,000. Indiana AFL-CIO President Brett Voorhies says the state s workers deserve better protection from workplace dangers. The union says the 38 inspectors with Indiana s worker safety agency would need more than 200 years to inspect each workplace once.
