in the hospital, students visited students and we heard tales of extraordinary heroism. gracie saved by brett hurt who was stabbed himself. he stepped right in front of him and took him took a stab for me really close to his spine. reporter: brett protected you? yes, he s the hero in this for me. he was my hero in this. reporter: speaking at the hospital brett says gracie evans saved his life too. i got stabbed in the back and it just had to have help in the next room and putting pressure on my wound to make sure i didn t bleed out. reporter: on a day of such horror so many acts of bravery. so many heroes, 8 of the 22 stabbing victims are still hospitalized but brett hurt was one who went home. this as investigators are still trying to figure out a motive for this knifing spree including the possibility that bullying was involved. ron claiborne, abc news, murrysville, pennsylvania. well, you might call this
