Construction crews working at the former site of New Waterford’s Number 14 Colliery have unearthed a group of nearly-100-year-old mining cars.
Because of their age, it’s unclear whether they were rake cars to carry miners underground, or old coal cars.
Cape Breton Miners Museum executive director Mary Pat Mombourquette tells CTV News the find is remarkable and rare, and should be preserved so the next generation can learn about the people who worked in the mines in the earlier days.
While it’s still not clear where the cars will end up, municipal councillor Darren O’Quinn says he’s working on a plan to keep them as a permanent part of Cape Breton’s mining story.
