Polk Township fire levy on May 4 ballot Staff Report GALION While there is no countywide primary election this year in Crawford County, Polk Township residents do have one item on their ballot for the Tuesday, May 4 election. Polk Township residents will decide on a renewal levy for fire protection and ambulance and emergency medical services. Following is the levy text as it appears on the ballot: ”A renewal of a tax for the benefit of Polk Township for the purpose of fire protection and ambulance and emergency medical services at a rate not exceeding 5.4 mills for each one dollar of valuation, which amounts to $0.54 for each one hundred dollars of valuation, for 5 years, commencing in 2021, first due in calendar year 2022.”

Potter and Price seek GOP nomination for First Ward council seat

BUCYRUS - In the May 4 primary election, there s just one race on the ballot in Crawford County: Republican voters in the city s First Ward will choose their candidate for a seat on Bucyrus City Council. For 24 years, the seat has been held by Bruce Truka, who announced early this year that he would not seek another term. First Ward Republicans will nominate either Brenton Potter, 30, 902 Maple St., or Tracey Price, 54, 1019 Reid St., for a spot on the fall ballot. No Democrat filed in the race, but during Tuesday s regular council meeting, Justin Scenters, 823 E. Warren St., told council members he intends to file as an independent candidate.

Independent candidates could join council president, at-large races

Independent candidates have until 4 p.m. May 3  the day before Ohio s primary election  to file petitions with the Crawford County Board of Elections for a spot on the fall ballot. The petitions then must be certified by the board. According to Ruth Leuthold, director of the elections board, this week two potential independent candidates picked up petitions. The board does not keep records of potential candidates who access petitions online. Two men have told the Telegraph-Forum they intend to run for council president, seeking to unseat Republican Kurt Fankhauser; they are Brian Seybert and Adam V. Frizzell. No Democrat filed in that race.

Bucyrus Bicentennial Commission offers mixology class

BUCYRUS - While the Bucyrus Bicentennial Commission s 10-foot-long bratwurst sandwich is getting dressed for its big debut on May 1, how about a few drinks? The commission will offer a mixology class later this month, sponsored by the Bucyrus Underground Speakeasy and Templeton Distillery of Templeton, Iowa, said Kelli Patterson, commission chairman. Templeton Rye was a popular whiskey in the Prohibition-era, Patterson said, so a member of the Bicentennial Commission reached out to a company representative. He s very excited about the fact that Bucyrus actually has a speakeasy, she said.
