A New University for the West and North-West, a Step Closer The West and North-West have taken a step closer to establishing a new university for the region. The Connacht Ulster Alliance (CUA) of GMIT, LYIT and IT Sligo today (Friday 21st May 2021) submitted a formal application to the Minister for Further & Higher Education, Simon Harris TD, for designation as a Technological University (TU). This is a significant day for all CUA students, staff and stakeholders, and marks the culmination of several years’ work. The proposed TU for the West and North-West will be one of the largest multi-campus universities across the island of Ireland.

Minister of State Frank Feighan said: “It’s fantastic to see months of hard work pay off today with the signing of the memorandum of understanding by two colleges, St Angela’s and IT Sligo, and the Ursuline Union. “Not only is this a historic occasion for both IT Sligo and the Ursuline Sisters, it’s also a very significant day for the Northwest region.

Over 500 GPs and nurses in mass vaccination at new centre

Speaking of the use of the arena for mass vaccinating, President of Sligo IT, Dr Brendan McCormack said the institute was delighted to accommodate the Covid-19 mass vaccination centre for the North-west region. We have worked with the HSE and our colleagues in Sligo University Hospital since the start of the pandemic supplying PPE, face visors, reagents and even respiratory aids.

Midwest Radio - Planning permission granted for Multimillion Euro Developments at IT Sligo

Planning permission granted for Multimillion Euro Developments at IT Sligo Planning permission has been approved for two major developments at IT Sligo.  It will include a complete rebuild of J Block, turning the single floor 1970’s building into a modern four storey complex that will enhance the modern state-of-the-art campus. The project is part-funded through Project Ireland 2040 and will help support additional new places for students at IT Sligo in line with the Institutes ambitious plans to increase student numbers to 10,000 by 2022.  The multi-million euro upgrade significantly boosts the Institutes plans to become a Technological University in partnership with GMIT and LYIT this year.
