New Virginia history standards are firing up parents at school board meetings across Central and Southwest Virginia. Many parents at these meetings believe the changes are linked to critical race theory. ABC13 began investigating what is being taught in local schools.
It all started in Franklin County, where many parents expressed concerns over what changes could be coming. Mom Deana Wright stated she is concerned over how new history standards will impact her kids.
“I just want to be sure our teacher staff and students receive honest education about our country s history and where we are headed,” she said.

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - There have been a lot of changes to Virginia classrooms this year, but one has been a few years in the making.
It’s a new African American history class and students right here in southwest Virginia are helping to develop the course.
For Franklin County High School history teacher Michele Jones, some days are for teaching and just as many are for learning.
“We’re learning things every week that for our generation, that stuff wasn’t taught in school,” Jones said Wednesday.
