Ontario school reopening dates to be announced on Wednesday: Education Minister Stephen Lecce

Last Updated Monday, February 1, 2021 8:05PM EST The Ontario government says it will let parents know on Wednesday when to expect their children’s schools to reopen. In a tweet Monday afternoon, Education Minister Stephen Lecce said the province will have its final advice on the matter by the middle of the week. “The Chief Medical Officer of Health confirmed to Premier ‪@fordnation & I that on Wednesday he will finalize his advice,” Lecce wrote. “The Government will provide certainty parents deserve by announcing on Wednesday the dates for reopening.” Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams said Monday that he would like see all schools in the province reopen next week but will be seeking input from each region’s medical officer of health before finalizing any plans.

New Hamilton outbreaks include retirement homes, men s shelter

CBC News previously spoke to doctors who were concerned about the impacts of shelter outbreaks, and said more people had been sleeping rough out of fear of contracting the virus.  Last week, the City of Hamilton said in a media release that it would be reopening the isolation shelter at the Bennetto Recreation Centre to ensure there was enough capacity for people experiencing homelessness who tested positive for the virus.  The city said the Bennetto shelter would have a maximum of 25 spaces for those referred to the location by shelter and health officials.  It was opened in March 2020 but decommissioned in the summer. An isolation shelter is currently being run by Wesley, and has 11 beds. Shelter staff self-isolate at home.

Ford made the comment as he delivered prepared remarks prior to an emergency meeting via teleconference with 113 Ontario hospital leaders on Friday afternoon.
