Officials urge caution on rivers due to hazardous conditions

Wildfire debris traveling downstream increases danger on waterways

Eugene Springfield Fire responded to a distress call Saturday evening after people floating the McKenzie River were trapped by a log in the middle of the river. With the arrival of unseasonably hot weather over Memorial Day weekend, people have flocked to the cool comforts of the Mckenzie and Willamette rivers, but increased amounts of trees and branches in the river from wildfire debris has heightened dangers for outdoor recreation this summer.  Where people can get themselves in trouble is when they get on a waterway they don t know, they don t have life jackets or they re not prepared for the currents or the situation that they enter, said Randy Henry, boating safety program manager for the Oregon State Marine Board, or OSMB. That s where we see the bulk of the fatalities.

Corps Urges Boaters To Make Safety On The Water A Priority

Corps Urges Boaters To Make Safety On The Water A Priority Details Published: 07 May 2021 Last year, 27 Oregonians died in recreational boating-related incidents – the most in three decades. Incidents overall spiked in 2020. Of 96 fatal and non-fatal occurrences – a 20-year high – three happened at Portland District reservoirs operated by the U.S Army Corps of Engineers. The Oregon State Marine Board tracks these and officials attribute the increase – in part – to the pandemic. “A big reason for that was record numbers of people getting outdoors as the COVID-19 pandemic limited other options,” said Randy Henry, boating safety program manager for the Oregon State Marine Board. Many of those people were new to boating,” he said.
