Honor Society Shamrock Drive underway: Selling of the green and the gold

(Credit: Ambrose Clancy photo) Members of the National Honor Society (NHS) at Shelter Island School are selling shamrocks in the week leading up to St. Patrick’s Day. Money raised will go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. MDA provides health care and support services for adults and children with neuromuscular diseases. Muscular Dystrophy involves the wasting away of muscles and is progressive. It cannot be reversed, although some medications and treatments can slow the disease. Gold shamrocks are $5 and green shamrocks are $1. NHS members are trying to beat last year’s goal of $479. To buy one, see an NHS Member, or cash or checks payable to Shelter Island School can be dropped in the main lobby in an envelope titled “NHS-Shamrocks,” or sent via Venmo to @Janine-Mahoney.

(Credit: Todd Gulluscio) Valentine’s Day was scheduled as the last meet of the year for the winter track teams. Unfortunately, the weather had other plans. More snow and ice had coated the tracks, so the season-ending Hampton Bays meet had to be canceled. Coach Kevin Barry was philosophical about the abrupt end to the season. “We got four of five meets run,” he said. “Some other schools only ended up with 2 meets.”

Track teams take on Southampton in frigid weather: Boys and girls post outstanding performances

(Credit: Kaitlyn Gullusico) While extremely cold conditions 19 degrees with a windchill of 10 degrees limited what events were completed, the Shelter Island girls track team put together another gritty performance against host Southampton on Jan. 31. Head to head in the completed competitions, the Islanders bested the Mariners, scoring 22 points to Southampton’s 18. In the field events, Sophie Clark took 2nd place with a 23-foot shot put, while teammate Kaitlyn Gulluscio threw 20 feet, outdistancing her last meet’s throw by 11 inches. The sand pit was frozen solid, so the long and triple jumps were not attempted.

(Credit: Francesca Frasco) After announcing eight new members in December into the National Honor Society (NHS), the Shelter Island School held an induction service for sophomores Elijah Davidson, John Febles Torres, Andrea Napoles, Sebastain Quigley-Dunning, Angelina Rice, Hayden Rylott and Benjamin Waife, and senior Emma Teodoru on Jan. 21. The recognition, while associated with academic achievement, is not based on GPA alone. “Admission requires a cumulative average of 90 or better, evidence of leadership, the desire to serve, and possessing an admirable character,” said NHS adviser Janine Mahoney.

Track teams brave conditions for successful meet: Take on large schools on the road

However, Shelter Island’s girls track team bundled up and made the trip over to Babylon under bright blue skies for their second meet of the season to compete against Babylon and Southold/Greenport. The team had their full roster of nine athletes. Southold had an equal number, while Babylon had 30 girls available. In track, each athlete is limited to three events, so a small team can not enter as many events as a larger school, which makes it difficult to win a meet. Babylon scored 75 points to Shelter Island’s 15, while the Southold/Shelter Island head to head score was quite close at 36 to 32.
