Sheboygan Police Department photo of Catalytic Converter

Catalytic converters are part of an automobile’s exhaust system, and recycling them for the precious metals platinum, palladium and rhodium they contain can typically yield $50-$100 for a domestic car converter…and over $450 for a diesel converter according to a quick online check. That makes them attractive to thieves, and the Sheboygan Police Department says they’ve seen an uptick in those thefts over the past few months.
A facebook post from the SPD included a few tips to discourage those thieves, such as parking in a garage if possible, leaving your vehicle in a very well-lit area, and avoiding barriers that might conceal the thief. Unattended vehicles left overnight at businesses have also been targeted. The SPD advises that video surveillance systems can help deter thefts, and there are also catalytic converter anti-theft devices available.
