Big Runs Push WPU to Big Win Over Park
Oskaloosa The first ever men’s basketball matchup between Park and William Penn in league play closed out the 2020 part of the schedule for the Statesmen on Tuesday night. The Pirates, who entered the season receiving votes in the NAIA coaches’ poll, held their own in the first half. But it was all WPU from there and the Statesmen, for the first time in program history, are undefeated at the Christmas break. The 110-81 victory puts William Penn at 11-0 on the year, 9-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
Defense Stands Out in Second Win Over MMU
Cedar Rapids Winning twice over a team in conference is always a challenge. Pulling off that feat over the span of four nights adds another degree of difficulty that the Statesmen had to overcome. Regardless, the William Penn men’s basketball team pulled away late in the first half en route to a 76-58 victory over Mount Mercy. The team is now 10-0 overall and 8-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
Once again, the Mustangs got things going as they scored the first three of the night. WPU took almost three minutes to score, but Karmari Newman (Sr., Detroit, Mich., Digital Communication) put in a jumper to make it 3-2. The teams then exchanged some misses before Kevion Blaylock (Sr., Houston, Texas, Information Technology) gave the Statesmen their first lead of the game at 4-3.

Oskaloosa The front half of a home-and-home for Statesmen men’s basketball against Mount Mercy this week was an offensive showcase for both sides. While the Mustangs ran with the Statesmen for the first few minutes, they could not sustain their success. Controlling the rebound game and putting up 60-plus points in each half, William Penn ran off with a 124-94 victory on Monday night. The Statesmen are now 9-0 and 7-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
The rare Monday night contest started with the Mustangs scoring the first six points. Karmari Newman (Sr., Detroit, Mich., Digital Communication) finally got WPU on the board as he sliced through the defense to put in a short jumper. Nathan Gehring (Sr., Waukee, Iowa) cut the lead down to two with a little floater that fell. Kevion Blaylock (Sr., Houston, Texas, Information Technology) gave the Statesmen the lead three-minutes in with a put back. The run would continue
