To change directions. A president has a right to hit a reset button. I think it is a good time to hit the reset button. I think he was right to hit the reset button, and i think it was something that i think the white house needs. I think its healthy. And i support him in it. Was he not happy with the direction you were setting . Look, i mean, i think bringing in fresh face, fresh people is a good thing. So, look, he has the best political instincts. Hes hang on a second. Yeah. He knows, i think, intuitively when things need to change. Ive seen it now for a year and a half on this wild ride with the president that i loved being a part of. But he intuitively determined that it was time to do something differently. And i think hes right. But its only been six months, not very long. When you say he wanted to do things differently, tell us precisely what he said to you, why he wants to do things differently and why you concluded that didnt include you. Im not going to get into that persona
14 months he has been in office. Lets start in the Briefing Room with our senior White House Correspondent jeff zeleny. Jeff, just bring us up to speed on who could be on the outs and especially this line about how at least it looks like john kelly, according to sources, is 100 safe. True . Well, brooke, good afternoon. The only one who knows that for certain, of course, is the president. As weve been saying all week long the president controls the timing of any announcements, any firings, any hirings. The reality here is that this is the president s situation and staff to control. This is certainly something he started and fueled as the week went along, saying change is good. He signaled that he was almost ready to build a cabinet he was comfortable with, suggesting, of course, he want ed ed to make s changes. That has sort of fueled, you know, an intense week of speculation and questions and rumors. People here in the white house and, indeed, agencies across washington, quite frankly
Presidency. Publicly he says he respects h. R. Mcmaster, but privately their relationship has been rocky. Its the adults in the room that talked him down. Its scary to see those guys leaving. What it tells the world is we are in chaos here at home. Thank you for letting me get out of washington. Its a thrill a minute up there. Anyone who works for the white house is inherently on borrowed time. Mcmasters exit is just one part of a broader shakeup under consideration by trump that is likely to include senior officials at the white house. So who else might be on their way out . The bottle is spinning. Chief of staff kelly, attorney general Jeff Sessions, va secretary jeff shulkin and epa administrator are a few of the names being floated as possible casualties, but who knows . And that is exactly why this white house is a hard time staying on message and getting anything done. No one is sure of their future. No one is sure of whos in charge. And no one is sure what the president wants. S
Department. It could drag into saturday because the dropdeadline is 12 01 sunday morning. Mccabe was leaving this morning. He said he would come to washington thursday to plead his case to preserve his government pension. Were told most likely it will be reduced because the legal bar is so hide to take it away altogether. The all grew out of the independent review of the clinton email case by Justice Department inspector michael e. Horowitz. Mccabe was not forthcoming with investigators and may have deliberately misled them or lied through leaks. Lying is a fireable offense for junior agents and mccabe would be held for the same standard. Wiping out a pension is a big deal for someone that spent two decades plus. By all accounts, rendering good service to the fbi. The trouble began when he got to the seventh floor and forgot the fact that the rules apply to him even though hes at the Top Executive level. Two former fbi agents say theres anger over mccabe and the amount of shame hes bro
Pardon himself . Plus, bill clinton speaks out on the me too movement and reflects on his affair with Monica Lewinsky. Do you feel like you owe her an apology . No. I do i do not i have never talked to her. And is the antitrump movement proving to have a california dream, or a primary nightmare for democrats in the golden state . This is mtp daily. And it starts right now. Good evening, im katy tur in new york, in for chuck todd. And welcome to mtp daily. We begin tonight on the verge of a constitutional crisis. As the president asserts absolute power over the rule of law. The president today declared an absolute right to pardon himself. His lawyer, rudy giuliani, told meet the press that he has the authority to terminate or launch any federal investigation. And his lawyers told bob mutualer in january that he is immune from obstruction of justice laws. Taken together, it appears that the president and his legal team are arguing that the constitution has granted him something akin to s
