Let me start background. Many of you know that on july 17, 1996, at 819 p. M. , twa flight 800 life to the jfk airport in hundred life the jfk airport in new york bound for paris. Twelve minutes later, 8 31 p. M. Off the coast of long island, the popular south shore of long island it was blown out of the sky. 230 people were killed. Fiftythree of them were twa employees. Many of you in this room knew at least some of those people. There is a memorial in their honor at the museum and if i were coming here and to spread a Conspiracy Theory i would be dishonoring their memory and would be insulting you. Instead im here to tell you what happened on july 17,
And when you leave here tonight, our hope is that you will leave with a much, much clearer understanding of the challenges that are facing foster children, but also quite frankly, mad as hell and truly committed to being a part of the solution. Now, to be sure, i know there are Extraordinary People in this room who either have had, myself included, or are currently working tirelessly on this issue. And are indeed making extraordinary progress and truly commendable impacts. But despite these heroic efforts, i think we can all agree that the foster care system is fundamentally broken. And what we need [applause] gabriel thank you. Well, what we really need is a dramatic pivot how we think about, see, serve, treat some of the most vulnerable and voiceless among us. The 400,000 americans that currently make up our foster care system.
