Guy H Sonny Quesenberry, 85, longtime principal remembered for his quiet strength and sharp humor

Guy H. ‘Sonny’ Quesenberry WILLIAMSBURG Guy H. “Sonny” Quesenberry, 85, died Thursday, March 4, 2021, at his home surrounded by his devoted family. He was a longtime resident of Newport News. “Sonny,” as he was known by those who loved him, was born Feb. 6, 1936, in Pulaski County to Swanson and Elizabeth. He grew up surrounded by his brothers and sister in the dazzling mountains of Southwest Virginia. Sonny was an All-American football player at Radford High School. While in Christiansburg, he met his lifelong mate, Dorothy Faye Correll. He was offered many football scholarships; he chose Clemson University, where he received his bachelor’s degree.

Asymptomatic COVID testing to start for Simcoe Muskoka schools

  BARRIE, ONT. Plans to start asymptomatic testing for students and staff are underway in Simcoe Muskoka. According to the provincial government, asymptomatic testing should help keep COVID-19 case numbers low in Ontario schools. Education Minister Stephen Lecce had ordered the tests be carried out in at least five per cent of schools every week. The boards, ministry and local health units will have input on the schools selected for testing. Pauline Stevenson, Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board, said St. Joan of Arc Catholic High School would be the first, starting next Wednesday (March 4). Then we can get a good understanding of the COVID situation in our schools and make sure that everybody can be as healthy and safe as possible, Stevenson said.

Under protocol, those in quarantine reflect positive COVID-19 cases and people who had significant contact with someone who is positive. In the case of sports teams – if an athlete or coach tests positive – the entire team must quarantine. ACPS’s total enrollment is 26,653 students as of Tuesday, according to the dashboard. 

Family and friends raising money to bury murdered couple, provide care for children

BY DENEEN SMITH Friends and family devastated by the murders of Latrice Meyers-Medrano and her husband Jesus “Jesse” Medrano, Jr. are trying to raise money to pay for the couple’s funerals and to provide for the children left behind. The couple was killed Wednesday, allegedly stabbed and slashed to death by Medrano’s son Jesus Medrano III after Medrano Jr. walked in on his son attempting to sexually assault a child in their home. Four children who lived in the home three that were the couples’ children, one a grandchild were witnesses in the attack. Medrano III was charged Friday with two counts of first degree intentional homicide, attempted first degree sexual assault and child abuse. He is being held on $2.5 million bond.
