water has surrounded a new plant in nebraska. still, top officials say there s no immediate danger. brad wheelis reports. reporter: in new mexico, a fast-moving wildfire is threatening the nation s main nuclear weapons lab. flames have already scorched more than 44,000 acres and the fire could get much larger. we are preparing for the fire to go any direction. the swirling wind, we don t know which way the wind s going to go until it hits. reporter: at least 30 structures have been destroyed and the entire town of los alamos, 12,000 people, ordered to evacuate. it s pretty surreal. a lot of the people i know have already left. they said they ve done this before so they re going to get out early this time. reporter: firefighters are struggling to keep the huge blaze away from the los alamos national nuclear lab where radioactive material is stored. there was a small spot fire on the property and the main fire came within 50 feet of the perimeter. but officials say the publ

chief fired both officers for insubordination. a high-profile execution has been carried out in virginia. teresa lewis was put to death for arranging the murder of her husband and stepson. as brad wheelis reports, supporters had argued until the very end that lewis was simply not smart enough to carry out the crime. reporter: thursday night, teresa lewis became the first woman executed in virginia in almost 100 years. death was pronounced at 9:13 p.m. reporter: lewis was sentenced to death in 2003 for hiring two killers, who shot her husband and her stepson. according to the prosecutors, the two were lured into lewis scheme by sex and money. the money in the form of her promise to split her son and husband s life insurance settlement with them. $250,000. lewis later confessed to the plot. i wish i could take it back. and i m sorry for all the people that i ve hurt. reporter: according to a witness of the execution, these were her last words.
prosecutors say they absolutely do plan to reindict and try the former governor again. chris bury, abc news, chicago. fired agriculture department official shirley sherrod and the naacp are publicly making amends. sherrod will appear this weekend with the naacp s president at a conference. the civil rights group had criticized sherrod after an edited videotape of a speech she gave appears to make her racist. radio host dr. laura schlessinger says she s going off the air following those controversial comments on her talk show last week. as brad wheelis reports, schlessinger will sign off at the end of the year. i want to be able reporter: dr. laura schlessinger said tuesday night on larry king live she would end her radio show. that my contract is up for my radio show at the end of the year, and i ve made the decision not to do radio anymore. reporter: the decision comes on the heels of an incident last week when schlessinger dropped the n world several times on her show
