Man who crashed through airport fence drove toward full plane taking off, US police say

Pennsylvania State Police said Weinhofer first rear-ended another vehicle a little before 3.30pm. The other vehicle had passengers, but no one was injured, said Trooper Nathan Branosky, spokesman for the state police Troop M based in Bethlehem. Weinhofer took off and continued driving south. A few minutes later, airport police said a detective was notified of a breach on the airport’s fence line near gate 28. A black pick-up truck drove through the chain-link fence that had a “No Trespassing” sign on it, causing about US$2500 in damage, police said. A maintenance manager followed the truck as it drove onto airport property, across the airfield and taxiway C. The truck then travelled through the Runway Safety Area and along runway 6-24, where the truck came within 150 feet (45.7m) of striking an Allegiant plane taking off with 171 people on board, according to court papers.

Opinion: Flower Power

Eager to get out and inhale fresh air, cooped-up humans fled pandemic tedium last spring, crowding parks, campsites, trails and other outdoor spaces. And why not? If you want to clear your head and lift your mood, there are worse ways to do it than by basking in nature. If you can capture the experience and share it with others later, it’s hard for some of us to resist taking a few photos. Every so often, farmers and their crops find themselves the focus of these would-be Kodak moments. Brad Weinhofer knows this feeling. The Express-Times, based in Easton, Pennsylvania, reports that Weinhofer Farms plants 150 to 200 acres of canola for a June harvest. Canola, which is commonly grown in Canada, also does well in the cooler climate of Pennsylvania. It’s planted in fall and goes dormant during colder months. It grows in spring and then blooms in mid- to late May.
