Pallet fire may have been due to wood burner and chimney

Improperly installed wood burner, chimney may have caused fire The Daily Telegram MORENCI The cause of a fire that destroyed a pallet facility in Morenci has been ruled undetermined, however it may have been due to an improperly installed wood burner. That was the determination following a state fire marshal s investigation last week, according to Morenci Fire Chief Brad Lonis. Crews were dispatched at 11:27 a.m. on March 3 for a fire at 235 Salisbury St. Multiple departments responded to the scene. The first crew arrived on scene seven minutes after the call was placed. Lonis said it was a pretty good response time considering Morenci firefighters are not at the station during the day.

At least 6 firefighters, including the chief, have resigned. To answer questions swirling in the community, a special online board meeting was held Saturday morning to discuss the changes to how emergency calls in the township will be handled. Fairfield Township Supervisor Chris McCallister, who was appointed at a special meeting Feb. 1 to fill the seat left vacant by the death of former Supervisor Larry Keck, told the approximately 34 attendees that the fire department is still intact and the residents are fully covered.
