Join “Isn’t she a beauty?” my sister said for the 77th time. Or so it seemed. It was Connie’s 13th birthday, and she was admiring her “new” bicycle. A spring growth spurt had left her first two-wheeler behind, and she had spent the summer begging for a new bike. My older sister was deaf to reasons why the brand-new blue bike at Barr’s department store could not be hers. Connie’s self-absorbed mind could not fathom the reality of a family of seven living on a concrete block worker’s salary in the late 1960s. All she knew was she had to have a new bike and it had to be blue.

Brad s epic challenge in memory of his mum

WHEN 17-year-old Brad Hickman’s mother was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of 43 it was devastating news for the family. There had been no warning. The receptionist at Windsor High School, Halesowen, suffered three seizures one day in December 2010. She got her diagnosis in January and was dead within a few months – on May 11, 2011. Ten years on and Brad still remembers the pain, but also the fantastic support that he, and especially his ten-year-old little sister Rebecca, received from Mary Stevens Hospice in her last few weeks. It was the day after the ninth anniversary of her death, on May 12 last year, that Brad set out on an epic journey to mark her death with a special gift for the Stourbridge-based hospice.
