He enlisted on his 18th birthday just two months after the bombing of pearl harbor. After graduating from Luke Army Airfield as a Fighter Pilot in august of 1943, at the ripe old age of 19. He spent the remainder of the war flying p40s, p51 combat missions in the pacific with the 78th fighter squadron. He participated in the first landbased fighter mission in japan in 1945 and has the unique distinction of having flown the final combat mission of world war ii on 14 august of 1945, the day combat ended.
