Hamilton Boys’ High School’s novice under-18 eight (centre) with their winners medals at the Maadi Cup before they were disqualified.
A teenage rowing team was left in tears as officials took their gold medals from around their necks at last week’s Maadi Cup after a controversial disqualification. Hamilton Boys’ High School’s under-18 novice eight boat – mostly aged 13 and 14 - had won their final at the annual secondary schools rowing event at Lake Karapiro, which attracts over 2000 competitors and about 10,000 spectators over a week-long festival. But after the medal ceremony, their boat was weighed, and found to be 200 grams underweight. The school believes the boat may even have been sabotaged and have lodged an official appeal to Rowing New Zealand.
