On Feb. 16, less than two weeks after a mysterious attacker made headlines around the world by hacking a water treatment plant in Oldsmar, Florida, and nearly generating a mass poisoning, the city’s mayor declared victory.
“This is a success story,” Mayor Eric Seidel told the City Council in Oldsmar, a Tampa suburb of 15,000, after acknowledging “some deficiencies.” As he put it, “our protocols, monitoring protocols, worked. Our staff executed them to perfection. And as the city manager said, there were other backups. . We were breached, there’s no question. And we’ll make sure that doesn’t happen again. But it’s a success story.” Two council members congratulated the mayor, noting his turn at the press conference where the hack was disclosed. “Even on TV, you were fantastic,” said one.

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife rejects fish passage waiver, putting project on hold
A fish passage waiver was all that stood in the way of the city of Prineville and Ochoco Irrigation District moving forward on a hydroelectric power project on Bowman Dam.
That waiver was denied by Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife last fall, so the two local entities officially pulled the plug earlier this month, terminating its Federal Energy Regulatory Commission preliminary permit. It s unfortunate, said City Engineer Eric Klann.
Since passage of the Crooked River Collaborative Water Security and Jobs Act paved the way for hydropower generation on Bowman Dam, city and OID officials had been trying to get approval to build a 3-megawatt plant on the dam. The project cleared most hurdles but still needed to account for the affect the dam will have on fish passage along the river.

When taking a look back at the 50 years since the A.R. Bowman Museum got its beginnings, it is obvious that not only did a lot take place, but a great and generous community made it all possible. One of the most recent hires at the museum put it very eloquently. Our collection system is really important because it helps us to keep track of when objects have been donated, and also who donated them and why they matter to Crook County. They aren t just nameless objects that we have, but they have a history, and they have an importance, indicated Sadee Moss, who serves as collections assistant.

A hacker breached a Florida city s water treatment network on Friday, increasing the amount of lye that would have been added to the water to a dangerous level.
But city officials in Oldsmar, Florida, say they were able to spot the intrusion and quickly reverse the setting before it took effect. Reuters reports that the intruder was able to access the water treatment network software after first gaining access to TeamViewer remote access and control software.
