Champion spearfisher Ian Warnock, of Flaxmill Bay near Whitianga, began diving the area in the mid-1970s.
He says since the late 1990s the numbers have risen to now regular sightings most dives. Every year there s more and more of them. I think it s one of those things that if you re going to go out spearfishing and diving you have to accept that, it s not going to get better.

A Bay of Plenty fisherman is taking a break from the water after a great white shark bit the front of his kayak, leaving tooth fragments embedded in the plastic.
Mike, 60, who didn t want his last name published, was livebaiting for kingfish from his four-metre kayak in Bowentown Harbour on January 4.
