Okay, it still looked pretty cold out at Ghost Lake.
The snow covering the lake had that crispy look, with the tire tracks and footprints stamped in it hard-edged and distinct. The bright sun that was shining through the wispy clouds overhead hadn’t yet done much to soften it and the sharp shadows it cast just added to the stark coldness of the scene.

But looks can be, especially in this case, a bit deceiving. When I’d left the city an hour before, it had been about -18 C. Here at Ghost Lake it was now right around -5 C. Not exactly balmy, I know. But it was a lot warmer than it looked.
